Green Tea Smoothies!

Everyone loves a smoothie in the morning... well, we've found a way to kick it up a notch with our delicious (and healthy) Organic Jasmine Green Tea.

Green tea has become well known for its health benefits.  It is rich in cancer-fighting antioxidants and has also been linked to improved brain function, fat loss and more.  Best of all, it tastes great!

Here's a quick and easy recipe to make a Barn Owl Green Tea Smoothie:

  1. Steep 8oz of Barn Owl's Organic Jasmine Green Tea
(1-2 tsp of tea leaves in 8oz of water at 180°F for 2-3 minutes)
  2. Toss your favourite fruits into a blender - we like blueberries, pineapple and banana, but experimenting is half the fun!
  3. Add the steeped tea to the blender along with a few ice cubes
  4. Health Tip: Get even more out of your smoothie by adding a few kale or spinach leaves; or a teaspoon of either flax or chia seeds
  5. If you'd like to beef up the protein, add a scoop of your favourite protein powder or a tablespoon of greek yogurt.
  6. Blend until smooth and enjoy!
Hint: try steeping a whole pitcher and keeping it in the fridge - now you've got brewed tea ready to make multiple smoothies.

An introduction to Keemun

Keemun is the most famous black tea produced in China and the first to be produced in Anhui, where up to that point, only green tea was produced.

The name itself is actually the "English" spelling of the Qimen County of Huangshan City, in Anhui province.

A tea with a relatively short history, Keemun was first produced in 1875 by Yu Quianchen, who had traveled to the Fujian province to learn the secrets of Black Tea production.

Keemun turned out to be a huge success and became a popular tea among both the Chinese and English.  In fact, Keemun is the most prominent ingredient in "English Breakfast Tea".

Keemun has fruity and floral aromas and a balanced taste that can display hints of bitterness or smokiness, depending on the variety and how it was processed.

While traditionally consumed "black" in China, the addition of milk and sugar, as is more customary in the West can enhance some of the flavours, creating hints of dried fruit and nuts.

Keemun pairs well with spicy foods (Indian, Mexican, Chinese), strong cheeses or vanilla-flavoured desserts.

Our first retail partner - Studio on the Hill in Uxbridge!

We would like to welcome Studio On The Hill in Uxbridge, Ontario to the Barn Owl Family!

We met Lori and Nathalie at the Uxbridge Fall Fair and after enjoying some of our tea, they've decided to carry our products at their studio.  We'll be celebrating our new partnership with a complimentary tea sampling of our Creamy Earl Grey and Pumpkin Spice teas, this Sunday, September 21st at the Studio between 10am and Noon.

About Studio On The Hill:
What simply started as sharing our mutual love of creativity, blossomed into the creative venture… Studio on the Hill.

Nathalie has always loved scouring the shops and shelves of vintage and used clothing stores looking for items that speak to her. She is motivated by the history and stories that “old” pieces carry, combined with the belief that items can and should have a longer shelf life than usually given.

Lori’s life long, insatiable desire to create and construct along with her love for nature and the environment continue to motivate and inspire her creations. Drawing on her 29 years of experience as a professional Interior Designer, Studio on the Hill now provides her with a new avenue to express her artistic capabilities in a fresh way.

How to make Iced Tea

We've had a few people ask us how to make Iced Tea using Barn Owl's loose leaf teas.  It's actually quite simple, and very similar to preparing hot tea.  You can make iced tea with just about any type of tea, so feel free to experiment.

The key to a great cup of iced tea is DOUBLE the leaves, HALF the water.

To make a glass of iced tea, follow your steeping guide for a typical 8oz glass but use twice the amount of tea and half the hot water (e.g. 4oz to make an 8oz glass).  Be sure to use the correct water temperature and steep times.

Once your tea has steeped for the right amount of time, pour the tea into a large glass.  If you wish to use a sweetener, add it to the hot tea.  Next, fill the glass with ice and stir.  As the ice melts, it will dilute the tea while chilling it.

The end result is 8-ounces of delicious, hand-brewed loose leaf iced tea!

Loose leaf iced tea tastes great and is virtually calorie-free, so you can enjoy as much as you like or serve it to the kids as an alternative to sugary juices or pop.

Recipe: Spiced Chai Basmati

Looking for an easy and delicious way to spice up your rice?  Try adding Barn Owl Tea's Spiced Chai!  It's completely effortless, and guaranteed to impress.

We recommend using basmati rice for this recipe.  Simply follow the instructions on the package and add one teaspoon of Barn Owl's Spiced Chai loose leaf tea for every cup of water used.  Our cinnamon-forward blend will add an incredible fragrance and taste to your rice.

Kick it up another notch by adding a cup of frozen veggies (carrots, peas and corn) for colour, or you can try traditional Moroccan ingredients, such as slivered almonds and currants.

Enjoy!

Barn Owl Tea in the news...

Barn Owl Tea Co. was recently written up by Ben Priebe of local newspaper, The Standard.

Check out what he had to say:

Barn Owl Tea - unique brews
BENJAMIN PRIEBE
The Standard

UXBRIDGE: There's something brewing in Uxbridge, with the launch of The Barn Owl Tea Co. by a local husband and wife duo.

Ethan and Sara Zon, fresh from their official launch at the Highlands of Durham Games, embarked on their largely web-based endeavour to provide customers with affordable, fine, loose-leaf teas.

The Zons, along with their 16-month-old daughter, have a longstanding love of fine teas, and decided to turn their hobby into a business venture, making their taste available to all, minus the white gloves and fancy atitude.

"My wife's family are all tea-drinkers," said Ethan. "In their house, tea is the crux of every meal and every conversation - it goes nicely with my background in wine-tasting, we both know how to appreciate an excellent cup of tea."

While they hope to grow into a storefront in the future, the Zon family is offering their wares on-line at www.BarnOwlTea.com, and is hoping to become known in the local community, as they live in Uxbridge.

The site features more than 24 unique varieties of tea, hand picked and tasted by Ethan and Sara.

"We literally drank hundreds of cups of tea and spent weeks finding the right suppliers, with the quality we wanted for our customers," said Ethan.

Hoping to dispel the mysterious perception of loose leaf tea, the couple has made easy to understand tasting and brewing notes for each and every tea.

"We've got strong black teas for breakfast, delicate green and white teas for serving cold, flavourful teas for bartending or cooking - there's no limit to how people can use our tea," said Ethan.

Visit www.BarnOwlTea.com and use coupon code BOTGO10, for a ten-per cent discount until August 31.
